Question: Chris Carter or Mike Jacobs?

Now with Daniel Murphy set to make his first stint on the DL with a sprained MCL it makes you wonder is it a 1 man race who starts Opening Day, I think not. Omar Minaya did not exactly say who will be starting on Monday, but i think it is a 2 man race between Mike Jacobs & Chris Carter. Let's start with the leading candidate being Mike Jacobs. Jacobs is a kind of guy that will strike out or hit a bomb like a Dave Kingman type of player. He plays a solid first base, but heading back to the offensive perspective, does Jerry Manuel really want Jacobs starting with other players that strike out often such as Jason Bay and Jeff Francoeur. At the age of 29, Jacobs has been working with Keith Hernandez on his defense and has been working with Howard Johnson to shorten up his swing, and see lefties better. Now speaking of Chris Carter, Carter to me is like Daniel Murphy, a guy who works so hard to get an opportunity and i think the time has come for Carter. Carter plays a solid first base along with having the ability to play the corner out field positions, which is the only reason why i could see Carter being on the bench. This spring in 15 games he has a .407 average with 4 homeruns and 9 RBIS in 27 at bats. The 27 year old carter just seems ready to make an impact and i think he can really surprise people and show the youth the Mets really have. If it was my call, i would have Chris Carter start off Mike Jacobs. Jacobs to me seems like Matt Stairs a guy who can come off the bench and hit a big clutch homerun when needed and start a few games. Where as at the age of 27 Carter just seems complete and ready to show was he has.

Jose Reyes to start the season on DL

After trying very hard to return in time for Opening Day, Doctors have advised Jose Reyes to take it slow, and return after the first week of Baseball. Mets Shortstop Jose Reyes will start the season on the Disabled List, and will return during the Series against the Washington Nationals on April 9-11th.
Even though i hate to say it i am glad this is the route the Mets are taking. I am going to Opening Day and i would of loved to see Jose be there but in reality its not good to rush a star. This is how the Opening Day lineup will probably look now.

1. Luis Castillo 2B
2. Angel Pagan CF
3. David Wright 3B
4. Mike Jacobs 1B
5. Jason Bay LF
6. Jeff Francoeur RF
7. Rod Barajas C
8. Alex Cora SS
9. Johan Santana P

Daniel Murphy has sprained MCL

In a news conference, Mets GM Omar Minaya said Daniel Murphy has a sprained MCL, and could miss 2-6 weeks to start the season. In addition, Murphy will start the season on the DL. Mike Jacobs is the leading candidate for the Opening Day first base job, with Frank Catalantto & Chris Carter fighting for the final bench spot on the 2010 Opening Day roster. Minaya also said Mets 1st base prospect Ike Davis is likely to start the season in triple A Buffalo.
This is a big blow to our team, because if Murphy could of been like he was in the 2nd half last year we would have another very good bat. See this is the same for the Jose Reyes situation, if i can't have my starters ( Reyes, Murphy ), i would really like to see Ruben Tejada & Ike Davis. Theres no hurt in having Ike Davis start the season as the firstbase man and go from there. Who knows Ike could really turn into something during Murphys time out & turn into a real threat in the lineup.

My Opinion: Chris Carter over Fernando Tatis

I am probably one of many Mets fans who are tired of looking at the Opening Day Roster with the same names on the team. One of those being Fernando Tatis who has been with the club since 2008. Tatis who was named the double play king last year was really off for a majority of last season until about September were he started to heat up. He is really struggling now in Spring Training where he has an average of .176 with 3 RBIS in 15 games. Fernando is one who we've heard has already made the team, who can play 1st base and the outfield as well, and that decent right handed bat off the bench. I think it is time to show the Majors that the Mets aren't just throwing run down players on to the field, and instead start to show some teams & fans our youth, one player being Chris Carter who they acquired for Billy Wagner from the Red Sox. Chris Carter is a first baseman and corner outfielder similar to Fernando Tatis and is a switch hittter, so having Carter will give Jerry Manuel more options opposed to having Tatis. This Spring in 14 games and 26 at bats he has 3 homeruns and 8 RBIS with a .385 average. Carter i also think has a better attitude; i say that because Carter is like a Daniel Murphy who is always working for an opportunity to show the manager who he is. Fernando Tatis on the other hand i just feel that he thinks he has a job wrapped up already. The last note on this debate is i know the Texas Rangers are looking for utility infield help, so if the Rangers are interested in Tatis they are also getting a possible 3rd baseman and an outfielder. So what do you think; do you like the youth and the hustler or the double play machine?

Venditte, impresses Yanks and Girardi

Pat Venditte, the ambidextrous pitcher showed a ton of promise for the Yankees and Joe Girardi today. Relieving in the fifth inning of New York's 9-6 loss to Atlanta. As the entire Yankees infield huddled around the mound, Venditte fired four warmup pitches from the left side, then four more from the right side. "I think I have to," Venditte said. "I don't have overpowering stuff from either side, and I think I really need this to be able to continue pitching. "I've got a long way to go still. I've only been in the lower levels of the Minors, and I have a lot to prove. Luckily, I have the opportunity to do that. Im looking foward to seeing what this kid really has. He has shown great promise and is one of the top prospects to look for on my list. He is a new thing to the Yankees, throwing both ways and a new thing to Major League Baseball.

Amazin's grab Acosta from waivers

The Mets have claimed veteran right-handed reliever Manny Acosta on waivers from the Braves. He has been assigned to the Bisons in minor league camp.Acosta, 28, has spent the last seven years in the Braves system after being signed as a free agent. Last year, Acosta split time between Atlanta and the Gwinnett Braves. He was 1-3 with a 2.63ERA and two saves in 18 relief appearances for Gwinnett and 1-1 with a 4.34ERA in 36 games with Atlanta. It is going to be interesting to see if Acosta plays a role in the Mets bullpen this year. He is going to start the season in Buffalo in 14 days, but is a nice weapon to have in the minors if any injury occurs.

Robertson to Marlins

Nate Robertson, a name who i thought the Mets should of grabbed to add pitching depth has been dealt to the rival Florida Marlins in exchange for minor league reliever Jay Voss.

Discussion: Oliver Perez

Oliver Perez who signed that 3 year deal prior to the 2009 season failed to start 15 games last year and has been really god awful this Spring and has given fans the reason not to believe in him. The stats below are his stats for the spring thus far:
W L ERA G IP K Walks
0 1 8.66 5 17.2 10 10
By the look at those stats you would think you are looking at a unproven Minor Leaguers Stats, well no your looking at an 8 year veterans stats. Since Perez arrived in 2006 he has only pitched one solid season which was in 2007 when he went 15-10 with an ERA of 3.56. Perez has grown from being a young fan favorite to being a player we wish the Mets never signed to an extension. So what should the Mets do with Oliver Perez? Well i think i have a solution, people may say oh well this is Spring some pitchers struggle in the Spring; WRONG! Perez has struggled since before his injury last year, and then in the minors when he was rehabbing. I think the Mets should send him down to work on some things, and not hurt the Mets in their rotation which i can bet he will do. So who do you call up? Nelson Figueroa? Pat Misch? Fernando Nieve? Bobby Parnell? Hisanori Takahashi? Those are some options but i guarntee you none of them will hurt the Mets like Perez will.

Cora & Murphy leave game with injuries

Mets first basemen Daniel Murphy left todays game with a knee injury after getting into a rundown between 3rd base & Home.
Mets Utility Infielder Alex Cora also left todays Spring Game after getting hit with a pitch in the hip by pitcher Chris Carpenter.
I went from being so optimistic to already being disapointed, from the injuries already to awful pitching from Santana,Maine,Pelf, and Ollie.

Santana has final tuneup tomorrow

Star Ledger writer Brian Costa says that Mets Ace Johan Santana will throw in his final Spring Tuneup tomorrow in a Minor League Game against a Cardinals affiliate at 1:10PM.
The Words FINAL TUNEUP in spring, tells me that the Season is so CLOSE i cannot wait! I would like to tip my hat to Matthew Cerrone of metsblog.com who did point out Johan probably is not facing the Marlins on Wednesday because he is facing them next monday at Citi Field.

UPDATE:REYES

As i mentioned in a previous post, Jose Reyes took live BP today. New word has come out by saying, Jose Reyes said he NEVER expected to hit that well, and the only thing holding him back from Opening Day is his timing at the plate. Reyes will continue to take live BP and do infield drills, with hope he will be leading off April 5th.

Teixiera struck by pitch, leaves game

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira left Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles after being hit by a pitch. There was no immediate word on the severity of his injury. With the bases loaded in the second inning, Orioles starter Jeremy Guthrie hit Teixeira on the right arm with a pitch. Tex spent several moments hopping around the plate in pain. Hopefully Tex will be fine and get right back on the field, feeling good for Boston in 6 days.

Days Until Opening Day

There are 6 short days until the Yankees are in Boston to face the Red Sox, April 4th at 8:05.

There are 7 short days untul the Mers are home to face the Marlins, April 5th at 1:10.

Reyes takes live BP

Jose Reyes took LIVE Batting Practice today against pitchers Dillon Gee & Mike Antonini in front of myriad amounts of beat reporters and analysts.Reyes spoke to the media after his round and said he was very satisfied with his work, and looks forward to progressing. Reyes also said he knows everyones wants him to be there at Citi Field on Opening Day, but he said he will not rush himself.
This is great; if the organization was pleased with the Batting Practice, the next step is a Grapefriut League Game.

Coste claimed by Washington

After being placed on Waivers last night by the New York Mets, veteran catcher Chris Coste has been claimed by the Washington Nationals a day later.
I guess that means Omir Santos has a spot on Triple AAA at least.

The Yanks just have to stop!

The debates regarding Chamberlain and a starter are still being made even with Joe Girardi's decision to have Phil Hughes become the 2010 number 5 starter. The organization and Brian Cashmen have not stopped, talking about Joba's future and the possibility of becoming a starter once again. Chamberlain said he is just focused on pitching out of the bullpen and setting up Rivera. Chamberlain is thus being transitioned to the bullpen, making his first relief appearance of the spring Saturday and recording a save against the Tigers. I feel everyone needs to stop, including GM Brian Cashmen. The more the organization messes with Joba's head the less effective he is going to be throughout the season. Cashmen is the voice always discussing the players futures and not whats going on now. Everyone who has a voice in this discussion, just have to stop and accept the fact Joba Chamberlain is the set-up man for the greatest closer in the game, and Phil Hughes will be trying to get the ball to Joba this year. I look forward to seeing some more emotion from Joba this year. That's where he feels more comfortable.

Mets have interest in former Red Sox pitcher Arroyo

The Mets had a scout in attendance at the Dodgers,Reds game scouting Reds RHP Bronson Arroyo. According to a source, the Mets have interest in Arroyo at this time. The source believes Arroyo would be a good fit for the Mets and Citi Field as he pitches to contact. Arroyo went 15-13 last year, with a 3.84 ERA, ans 127 k's. It would be a good pickup for the Mets, we have mentioned some other names such as Nate Robertson. Arroyo would be able to help Mike Pelfrey and Oliver Perez figure it out at the back-end of the rotation.

I just don't get it!

Is it just me because i feel Jerry Manuel is making a very bad decision in really making a push for Top Pitching Prospect Jenrry Mejia to make the bullpen. Mejia who has been a starter his whole career is being pushed; why because he throws 95 and having a good spring? I just don't get the idea of rushing a 20 year old star in the making. I can't even think of another starter in the Mets system that even compares to Mejia so why convert your best starting pitching prospect to being the setup man for one of the best closers in baseball; in one of the biggest stages; New York!
I actually really feel that this has the chance to turn out the way the Joba Chamberlain situation turned out. A top starting pitching prospect that throws mid 90's, so converted to being a setup man. Joe Giraridi later feels he should be a starter, so he converts him to the rotation and later gets roughed up. Now after being a phenom finds himself in a crowded Yankees bullpen and not being noticed. That is what i definitely see happening, i am just hoping Manuel decided Kiko Calero is better suited to head up North on April 4th.

Parnell & Green expected to head to Triple AAA; Coste placed on waivers

According to Matt Cerrone of Metsblog.com; and Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com, the Mets have made their decision and will option relievers Sean Green & Bobby Parnell to Triple AAA when the season begins. Parnell and Green are two pitchers that stuck with the Major League Mets last year during the entire season. According to an e-mail that was sent from Rubin to Cerrone, Rubin says that Hisanori Takahashi and Nelson Figueroa will make the team, and with these moves it will make room for eiether Jenrry Mejia or Kiko Calero to make the team.

Adam Rubin has also said the Mets have placed catcher Chris Coste on waivers, which means that he will eiether be picked up by another team or will be with the minor league club soon.

Wow; We are a week away from baseball returning to its best!

We are exactly one week from the Yankees facing the Boston Red Sox in Boston on Easter April 4th at 8pm.

We are one week and a day away from the Mets facing the Florida Marlins at Citi Field on April 5th at 1:10 PM.

3/28 Yankees VS: Tigers

Sure looks like Andy Pettitte will have the Opening Day lineup behind him here at George M. Steinbrenner Field that is, if they play. Pettitte's been dodging rain outs all spring and the wet stuff is in the forecast once again for this afternoon, though they could get the guys on the field right now and play: Here's the Yanks lineup for today

YANKEES
Jeter SS
Johnson DH
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Cano 2B
Posada C
Granderson CF
Swisher RF
Gardner LF
Pitching: Andy Pettitte LHP

Please Don't rush Jenrry, Jerry!

I must say i am starting to get frustrated in the decision making of this club. I don't understand why you would rush a 20 year old stud who steadily is moving up on the Top Prospects list and is obviously destined to be a starter. Jerry Manuel is still in the process of making his final decision but he wants Mejia to become the setup man for K-Rod; what because he throw 95 on a consisten basis? We also have an awful rotation after Santana, so we are going to need a top pitching prospect in the minors like Mejia to bring up mid-season or in 2011. I also think Manuel is getting desperate meaning he doesnt trust Nieve, Igarashi, or Parnell.

I Have a trade proposal...

According to Jayson Stark of ESPN.com, the Mets are interested in trading one of their extra catchers such as Chris Coste or Omir Santos in exchange for Major League ready pitching depth to put in Triple AAA, just in case of an injury. Now after hearing about this, i read another post that was written by Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com, and he wrote that the Tigers would really like to trade their 32 year old lefty, Nate Robertson who is owed 10 million dollars in 2010. So that got me thinking, the Tigers current starting catcher is veteran Gerald Laird, with their back up being prospect, and assissant general managers son Alex Avila. So in that case the Tigers could always use another catcher. Tigers General Manager David Dombrowski would really like to get Robertsons 10 million off the table. What about an Omir Santos for Nate Robertson swap, and ask the Tigers to eat 7 million of his contract, like the Gary Matthews JR. trade. That would be perfect because we know what Nate is capable of, just his health is always a concern.

Reyes & Coaching Staff aiming for Opening Day

According to multiple sources that include Mets play by play announcer Gary Cohen and Mets 3rd base coach Chip Hale, Jose Reyes has increased his workload everyday since he returned to the club, and as of this morning is practicing with the team and is expected to get into a game this week. Chip Hale told Mets on field announcer Kevin Burkhardt, that to him Reyes looks and says hes ready to go. Hale also said that he thinks Reyes will be ready but it is up to the men who are running the organization to make the final decision.

Nelson Figueroa to make the team?

Nelson Figueroa had pitched in 3 games, while allowing no runs in 8 innings of work this Spring, prior to yesterdays outing. Figueroa took on the Florida Marlins yesterday and was roughed up, being charged with 7 earned runs over 2.2 innings pitched. Many thought that Figueroa, who was fighting for a spot on the team, his time with the Mets might of been done after his performance yesterday. Following the game yesterday, Jerry Manuel told reporters that he enjoys the fact that Nelson can go out and throw 3 innings mostly every day if needed to, and that he throws strikes and thats key. If not on the Opening Day roster come April 5th he will be released, as Figueroa is out of options.
Well i have said from the get go, i want Nelson on this team, he has such poise and commitment when he takes the mound. He also has great veteran leadership, and as Jerry explains is a versatile pitcher that you can throw out there almost every day.

3/27 Yankees VS: Tigers

The Yankees and Tigers do battle this afternoon. The story of the day is Joba Chamberlain's return to a relief role, but I'm also interested to see how Marcus Thames does against left-handed pitching. He singled in his first at-bat last night against Jamie Moyer and the Yankees want to give him the opportunity to keep logging at-bats, since they envision him as a right-handed power bat off the bench and a possible platoon guy.

Here's Today's Lineups:

Tigers
TBA Pitching: Nate Robertson LHP

Yankees
Gardner LF
Johnson 1B
Posada C
Thames DH
Granderson CF
Winn RF
Pena SS
Russo 2B
Laird 3B
Pitching: A.J. Burnett RHP

My Thoughts on current Mets Rotation

With the state of the current Mets rotation and bullpen, i think i have a solution. Starting with the rotation, I think what the Mets should do is put Oliver Perez in the bullpen as a long man and the 2nd lefty of the pen. Next you move Nelson Figueroa to the rotation who in 8 innings and 3 games he has an ERA of 0.00. If come April 5th which is Opening Day, Figueroa is not on the Major League squad he will be released as he is out of options, and i really don't want that happening. Then on Opening Day your rotation is:
LHP Johan Santana
RHP John Maine
RHP Mike Pelfrey
LHP Jonathon Niese
RHP Nelson Figueroa
Next i say you pull the trigger and add more depth by signing former Yankee Chad Gaudin, which will put pressure on some of the starters( NOT NAMED SANTANA ) to preform to keep their spots. Also i case of injury Gaudin can be their to make a spot start, or come up to the bullpen. I would also not rush RHP Jenrry Mejia, and let him develop as a starter in the minors. Next i announce that RHP Fernando Nieve who if also not on Opening Day roster will be released, you make Nieve the setup man for K-Rod. So on Opening Day, this is what i really hope i see coming out of the pen:
CL Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez
SU Fernando Nieve
SU Ryota Igarashi
LHP Pedro Feliciano
LHP Oliver Perez
RHP Kiko Calero
RHP Bobby Parnell

3/26 Yankees Vs: Phillies

Manager Joe Girardi has chosen his fifth starter, Phil Hughes, who will start on short rest vs. the Phils on Friday in a game you can listen to live on Gameday Audio at 7:05 p.m. ET. Jamie Moyer and the Phillies cross Tampa Bay to take on the Yankees in their final Grapefruit League meeting tomorrow.

Park sharp, Aceves not so much

Starter Alfredo Aceves, fighting to make the club's 25-man roster, struggled against the Orioles lineup. The right-hander was lifted after pitching to four batters in the third and yielded six runs on six hits. Sergio Mitre, facing a similar situation, allowed a run over his two innings of work. Chan Ho Park, in the mix to be the eighth-inning bridge to Mariano Rivera, tossed two scoreless frames, yielding two hits while fanning two. Personally I feel that Park should get the 8th innings nod. He has a great arsenal for a reliever and is more experienced and controlled for a setup man. If I were Girardi I would put Joba in the 7th and Park in the 8th, leading to Rivera.

Pedro Feliciano wants to be setup man

According to multiple sources, Pedro Felicano told reporters on Thursday "I worked so hard this off season that i'm not scared to pitch in 90 games" exclaimed Feliciano. Feliciano has came out to say that he wants to become the 8th inning man for the Mets.
Jerry please do not give in, we need a lefty specialist that can get any lefties batter out at anytime, we can't have that guy setting up one of the best closers in baseball.

Second Shake Shack at Citi Field? FALSE!

Citi Field has added food stands "Blue Smoke" and "Box of Frites" to the Promenade level of Citi Field in back of homeplate. Rumor HAD it that along with those two they would be adding the most famous of them all "Shake Shack" to the Promenade, but rumors now HAS it, that is not going down.
CRAP! 2 Hour lines will still be in effect for the 2010 season!

Jerry Manuel set to say Niese is # 5 starter

On the same day to where the Yankees made the announcement that Phil Hughes will be the number 5 starter, cross town the Mets are close to naming Jonathon Niese the 5th starter, the announcement should come as soon as tonight, or tomorrow morning.

Days Until Opening Day

There are 10 days until the New York Yankees head to Boston to face the Red Sox on Opening Day April 4th at 8:05 PM.

There are 11 days until the New York Mets face the Florida Marlins home, at Citi Field on Opening Day April 5th at 1:10 PM.

Yankees release Chad Gaudin; Mets already discussing a contract

After multiple attempts to trade RHP Chad Gaudin this past Spring, the Yankees have decided to cut ties with the 27 year old as they have released him.
As i said many times before, a gut feeling told me the Mets would be interested to add pitching depth, well they are VERY INTERESTED according to multiple sources and are already discussing a deal with him, and his agent.

Yankees name Phil Hughes 5th starter

The manager of the reigning World Champion Yankees, Joe Girardi announced today that former Yankees setup man Phil Hughes has been named the 5th starter in the rotation for the 2010 season. Hughes, was competing for the number 5 spot with Joba Chamberlain is now in the mix to setup the best closer in baseball, Mariano Rivera. Last season setting up Mo, had an ERA of 3.03, with a record of 8-3 and 96 strikeouts. Hughes pitched in 51 games last season, 7 of which were starts. Just so Yankee fans know, expect the Joba rules to roll over to the Hughes rules.

I don't know about you but... I AM READY TO GO!

I feel like a 5 year old 12 days from Christmas, except were not excited for Christmas, were awaiting the arrival of the Summer Boys to get ready for another long and tough season. I cannot wait to step into the Rotunda of Citi Field on April 4th which is the Mets annual pre-season workout which i will be attending at 11:00 AM. I am also very excited to see Curtis Granderson in Pinstripes for the first time on Easter night, just the feel that baseball is back, and the talk of the season just makes me think, as a Mets fan; THIS COULD BE OUR YEAR.

Reyes uncertain about Opening Day

After getting the clearence to resume baseball activites Jose Reyes arrived in Port St. Lucie this morning and immediatley began working out in the weightroom and out on the field, and looked pretty good. He made a apperence on SNY's televised game today, and said he is ready to get back to playing in games and is still uncertain if he will be in the Opening Day lineup.
I do not want him to push him, but i will be so excited to see him on Opening Day.

Days Until Opening Day

There are 11 days until the Yankees will head to Boston to face the Red Sox on April 4th at 8:05 on ESPN.

There are 12 days until the Mets will stay home and face the Florida Marlins on April 5th at 1:10 on SNY.

Yankees place Chad Gaudin on waivers

According to Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, he tweets that the Yankees have put RHP Chad Gaudin on Waivers, which means the Yankees can release the righty and pay 1/4 of his salary or send him to the Minors and continue to pay his full salary, which stands above 2 Million. Gaudin who was competing with others such as Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, Sergio Mitre, and Alfredo Aceves for the fifth spot spent half of the 09 season with the Yankees and half with the Padres. He went 2-0 with a 3.43 ERA and 34 Strikeouts in 6 starts and 5 games out of the pen. He also contributed in last years ALCS for the Yankees, having an ERA of 0.00.
I really do if released the Mets should look into him, i like what i saw from him in 09 with the Yankees, and he is still very young. As seen last year in Flushing you can NEVER have enough pitching.

Who is Jon Weber?

Weber an out fielder in the Yankees organization, was originally signed by the Cincinnati Reds as a non-drafted free agent in August of 1999. In July 2003 he had his contract bought out by the Oakland Athletics organization. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2004 after becoming a free agent, and played in their organization, reaching as high as Triple-A. He signed as a minor league free agent with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006, but by the 2007 season he was back in independent league ball. However, he was again purchased, this time by the Texas Rangers on June 4, 2007. After spending a month with the Rangers organization, Weber was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays on July 16, 2007 in exchange for cash considerations. He signed with the New York Yankees organization on November 25, 2009, and was invited to Spring Training. So far Weber is turning some heads this spring, in 12 games and 21 at bats, he has 12 hits, which is a 571 AVG, with 5 RBI's and a 1,333 OPS. I am looking forward to seeing what Weber brings to this organization, because so far he his looking great.

What to do with Santos?

With veteran Rod Barajas being the opening day catcher for the Mets, and Henry Blanco having a nice spring earning the backup spot, it leaves Omir Santos out of the mix. Probably the No. 2 catcher, behind Josh Thole, in Buffalo, but there is always the posibllity of trade. Knowing the Mets there is a chance of injury, and one to either catchers on the 25 man roster, will require the call-up of a catcher. Josh Thole is expected to have a full devolpment year in the minors without interuption. The obivious way to avoid this is to keep Santos and anyway, you are not going to get much of an improvment in a trade for Santos at any position. So we will see but im expecting Santos to be in a Bisons uniform opening day.

Girardi to make 5th spot decision by Friday

Joe Girardi is under a lot of pressure this week, with only 2 more days for him and his coaching staff to decide who will be the 5th starter behind C.C Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettite, and Javier Vazquez. A group which consists of Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, Alfredo Aceves, Chad Gaudin and Sergio Mitre. Hughes seems to be in the lead, he told the media how he feels he did his last time out. "I thought I threw a few of the best changeups I've ever thrown, and probably the first strikeouts I've ever gotten off a changeup. It's hard to swallow the three home runs, because I'm happy with the way I am throwing." Coming into the spring it looked like Chamberlain's job to lose thought the skipper, and so far he is on track to do just that. He has shown improvement, from the beginning of the spring, but is it enough to grab the spot? I feel Hughes has the better arsenal for the job. His 95+ fastball always opens eyes, along with a nasty slider and a devolping changeup, is showing real promise. He is able to control his pitch count and emotions on the field, significantly better than Joba. It looks like Mitre, Aceves, and Gaudin are out, with the rumors of a possible swap of Mitre or Gaudin for outfielder Jamie Hoffman, who the Yanks are having second thoughts on after returning him to L.A. yesterday. We will just have to see, come Friday which of these two will be helping the great Rivera in the bullpen, and who will round out the starting 5 for the 2010 season.

And then there were 3

Could the 1st base job be up for Grabs? If it is the number of players competing is now down to 3. The Mets number one offensive prospect first basemen Ike Davis who tore it up this spring has been sent to Minor League camp according to numerous sources. Davis, who in 12 games this spring hit .480 with 3 home runs and 10 RBI. Davis was trying to compete with Daniel Murphy who is currently slotted to be starting Opening Day, Mike Jacobs, and Chris Carter for the 1st base job.
I am glad i saw him this spring and see what we have in the Minors and now i cannot wait to see him mid season or full time in 2011.

Reyes to return to PSL Tomorrow

After my post last nite asked when we would hear something about Reyes, we have! Omar Minaya addressed the media today and said the doctors who have been treating Jose Reyes have cleared him to resume baseball activities after 2-3 weeks of rest.
This is AMAZING news, now the question is will he be ready to play Opening Day, and Omar Minaya said that is still a question because Reyes has not played a game this spring and now will have to get back in baseball shape. I do not think he is that far behind where he has to be. Maybe he can spend the remainder of this week working on baserunning and infield and just working out, then next week get into a few games. I just hope Jose, who wants to play Opening Day more than anyone, doesn't push himself to the point where he injures himself just to play one game.

Rockies close to deal with Joe Beimel

As i have said numerous times this offseason Joe Beimel is one of two players i have wanted to see with the Mets for so long, and after it seemed my wish might of been coming true, it now looks like i will have to wait even longer. After Beimels agent came out and said he was no longer talking to the Mets because the Mets were giving mixed signals, Beimel is close to a MINOR LEAGUE DEAL with the Colorado Rockies.
I mean listen i understand not giving him a major league deal when you have Hisanori Takashashi who is lighting it up in the spring but a minor league deal are you serious we could of had the best lefty combo in the pen!

Yankees want Jamie Hoffman back?

After returning Outfielder Jamie Hoffman to the Dodgers today, their are reports they Yankees would like to get Hoffman back in exchange for possibly Sergio Mitre or Chad Gaudin. Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, have said the Yankees would like to continue building outfield depth after losing Austin Jackson and Melky Cabrera this offseason.

Yankees looking to trade Gaudin; Mitre before season

Reports have surfaced the idea that the Yankees have narrowed there #5 starter battle down to Joba and Phil Hughes, as many reports have come out to say the Yankees would like to trade both Sergio Mitre and Chad Gaudin before the season gets going. The Arizona Diamondbacks are one team that could be interested, mainly because All-Star Brandon Webb Does not appear ready for opening day.
This may sound weird but i think Omar Minaya of the Mets should look into Gaudin, as proved last year you can never have enough pitchers in your system, and he stepped up for the Yankees down the stretch last year.

My Vote is for Ruben Tejada; and how is Jose Reyes?

The Debate in Camp is weather to start the 34 year old Infielder Alex Cora or to start the exciting 20 year old top shortstop prospect Ruben Tejada in replace of Jose Reyes. These are the two players Spring Training Stats thus far:
Alex Cora
AVG:
308 HR: 0 RBI: 1 AB: 26 H: 8
Ruben Tejada
AVG:
349 HR: 0 RBI: 5 AB: 43 H: 15

If i had a say in this competition i say you give it to the exciting young Shortstop Ruben Tejada. To me if i cannot have Reyes to start the season, why can't i have a player to look forward to in the future, and someone who can provide sharp defense and good offense until Reyes returns. Alex Cora did alright last season but you can tell he just is not a starter and is much better suited as a good veteran leader and an excellent pinch hitter in clutch situations. I cannot wait until Reyes returns except i also cannot wait to see Tejada that is if Manuel gives him the nod.

Now my next question is; HAS ANYONE SEEN OR HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT JOSE REYES? I feel like i haven't heard one thing since we found out he will be out 2-8 weeks due to a thyroid imbalance. I would really like to get an update from Omar and the organization just to find out how much longer he will be out until he can resume baseball activities; i think it has been what 2-3 weeks so far?

3/22 Yankees Vs: Phillies In game notes

Phillies 9, Yankees 7

Pitching:

Right-hander A.J. Burnett struggled in the first inning against the Phillies. He allowed four hits, five runs and two walks as Philadelphia took a 5-1 lead. On the other hand Cole Hamels allowed seven runs, 6 earned in 4 innings. The worst starts this spring for both pitchers.

Offense:

Curtis Granderson had an RBI double to put the Yanks on the board. Eduardo Nunez's knocked in two runs in the fourth inning to cut the Phillies lead to 5-4. Mark Teixeira then hit a two-run homer to left-center field to give the New York a 7-5 lead.

Placido Polanco hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Dane Sardinha cleared the bases with a three-run double to give the Phillies a 5-1 lead. Wilson Valdez delivered the two-run walk-off shot to give the Phillies the victory.

The Yankees do not play Tuesday, but they return to action Wednesday, when they host the Nationals at 7:05 p.m. live on MLB.TV. Right-hander Javier Vazquez faces Livan Hernandez.

Montero, Romine sent down by Yanks

Catchers Jesus Montero and Austin Romine were reassigned to Minor League camp, along with outfielders Colin Curtis and Reid Gorecki. Montero was 3-8 this spring, and is scheduled to start with the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees on opening day. Romine was 2-11 in grapfruit play, He is slated to begin the season at Double-A Trenton. Manager Joe Girardi said that the Yankees have a bright future ahead with both Montero and Romine in the chain. "They need to go play and mature and learn the finer points of catching and the pitcher-catcher relationship," Girardi said.

Jamie Hoffman heading back to LA

Jamie Hoffman who the Yankees acquired in exchange for Brian Bruney, has been returned after being taken in the Rule 5 Draft last summer by the Nationals. Hoffman will be heading to LA though, because Washington selected him and would've returned him to LA. It looks like the final right handed bench spot will go to Marcus Thames or Greg Golson.

If Opening Day was tomorrow for Mets

If Opening Day was tomorrow and the 25 man rosters had to be submitted, i think i might have a clue what the roster would be from the bullpen to the bench. I am going to be showing you what i think based on the Spring will be the 25 Opening Day Roster for the New York Mets.
Starting Rotation
Johan Santana
Mike Pelfrey
John Maine
Oliver Perez
Jonathon Niese
Bullpen
Francisco Rodriguez
Ryota Igarashi
Pedro Feliciano
Bobby Parnell
Hisanori Takahashi
Fernando Nieve
Kiko Calero
Bench
Gary Matthews JR.
Jose Reyes( Alex Cora but he will be starting Opening Day )
Henry Blanco
Fernando Tatis
Mike Jacobs
Starting Defensive Alignment
Catcher: Rod Barajas
First Base: Daniel Murphy
Second Base: Luis Castillo
Shortstop: Alex Cora
Third Base: David Wright
Left Field: Jason Bay
Center Field: Angel Pagan
Right Field: Jeff Francoeur

I truly do believe this is what it will look like on Opening Day as you will start to hear more and more about Jerry Manuel assigning youngsters to camp. The Only Few Questions is for one if Reyes will start the season on the DL, and if he does i believe Ruben Tejada will start the season on the Bench. And the only other question is weather Jenrry Mejia will start the season with the Mets, again if i am Jerry Manuel i let him work on starting in the Minors we have K-Rod for the next few years, and you can find a setup man out of the blue but you cannot find an ace out of no where and that is what i believe we have in Mejia.

Days Until Baseball officially returns

The Mets will face the Florida Marlins on Monday April 5th at 1:10 at Citi Field inDays

Moseley Optioned to Minor Leagues

The Yankees have reassigned the former Los Angeles Angel RHP Dustin Moseley to Minor League camp. He allowed eleven hits and seven runs in 6.1 innings this spring, he’ll fill a middle relief/swingman role for Triple-A Scranton. I don't feel Moseley would have able to make the team anyway, Girardi only has to decide between Logan and Ring for the 2nd lefty in the bullpen, and the final spot in the rotation will decide who finishes the strong pen out. There are now 48 players still in camp, 14 of whom are non-roster invitees.

Mets to release Josh Fogg

After signing with the Mets in January, the Mets have released 33 year old veteran pitcher Josh Fogg. Fogg did not pitch in a single game with the Mets this spring due to several injuries. Josh pitched with the with the Rockies in 09 with an ERA of 3.74 in 24 games.
