Yankees sign Rene Rivera

According to Multiple Sources, the New York Yankees have signed catcher and former Met Rene Rivera to a minor league contract.Rivera who is 26 will report to Triple A Scranton. He has not had to much Major League experience., as he started his career with the Seattle Mariners in 2004 and played his last major league game in 2006. He was then brought to Spring Training by the Mets, but was later released.

I am guessing they just want to bring in a guy that has experience rather than rush Jesus Montero to help out Francisco Cervelli until Jorge Posada returns.

Buzz:: Mets Contact Rockies about Luis Castillo

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Mets have contacted the Colorado Rockies about acquiring Luis Castillo, as the Rockies are looking to improve from their utility man Melvin Mora.

I assume the Mets would eat a large portion of his remaining money if Colorado was interested in his services. I would pull any deal in a minute my only question is who would take his spot? Alex Cora, Ruben Tejada, or maybe their having Daniel Murphy work on second? Either way try to get it done Omar so we can finally end the Luis Castillo Era in New York.

Posada out 3-4 Weeks

The second Yankee in as many days has been placed on the disabled list for an extended period of time. Jorge Posada joins Nick Johnson on the disabled list and is scheduled to miss 3 to 4 weeks with a hairline fracture in his right foot.

In my eyes, though the Yankees still have big bats such as Jeter, Teixeira, and A-Rod, you have to say to yourself this is a problem now that Posada, Granderson, and Johnson are on the DL.

WAS-- Craig Stammen
5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 Earned Runs, 4 Walks, 2 K

Pitching:

After a lengthy start in his last, Mike Pelfrey looked like he was a bit effected by the damp conditions at Citi Field today. He also looked like he could not get a great grip on the ball though he did strike out 6.

They were robbed on one occasion with the bases loaded and Jeff Francoeur up; Roger Bernadina layed out and made a sensational play to end the threat. Jose Reyes continued to struggle today, as he made an error on the bases then tried to bunt in a big situation that was a failed attempt.

Game Picture:

The Game Picture tonight goes to Chris Carter the rookie that was just called up today; named the Animal by Jerry Manuel in Spring came up in a very clutch situation to rip an RBI double down the right field line to give the Mets the lead. It also could have gone to Ike Davis for another INCREDIBLE catch.

Catalanotto Designated; Chris Carter Promoted

During tonight's PostGame, Jerry Manuel announced, Utility Man and Long Island Native, Frank Catalanotto has been designated for assignment, and they will call up Chris Carter who almost made the big league club out of Spring Training.

Catalanotto( This Season ):

.167 AVG, 4-24, 1 RBI, 1 Walk

Carter( In Triple AAA ):

.339 AVG, 37-109, 6 HR, 20 RBI

I love this move though i would much rather have Catalanotto over Gary Matthews JR any day. I hate to say it, but Carter has lots of talent and Jeff Francoeur might need to watch himself because it comes to a point sometimes where a team like the Mets who are pretty much in the race, can't continue with Francoeur striking out every at bat.

Hisanori Takahashi
1.0 IP
Pedro Feliciano
0.1 IP, 3 H, 1 Earned Run, 1 K

The Mets scored their first run in the bottom half of the 7th, as Luis Castillo knocked a single to left which scored Rod Barajas. According to Matt Dunn the producer of SNY, the Mets have called catching prospect Josh Thole up to the Majors and have placed catcher Henry Blanco on the Bereavement List, due to personal reasons, which has caused him to return to Venezuela.

Best Game in last 2 years?

I do not remember a game with so many exciting moments, as a Mets fan. One game comes to mind which was last May in Boston with the Omir Santos HUGE clutch home run off Papelbon in the ninth. Last nights game had everything. 2 home runs by a rookie & a vet. A walk off home run. A pretty lenghty pitching performance, and an inbcredible number 1 web jem courtesy of Ike Davis. So will this game propel the Mets for the rest of this home stand? I don't know but all i know is that in my mind last nights game was the best.

ITS A CRAZY NIGHT AT FENWAY AND I HAVE NEWS THAT JUST BROKE ON THE INJURY OF NICK JOHNSON

The Yankees DH tonight, Nick Johnson was pinch hit for in the top of the 3rd inning, replaced by Marcus Thames. We just recieved news on Nick, and it appears to be a swollen right wrist. Good thing nothing to serious for the injury prone Johnson. Also I broke news earlier on Cano, we are still waiting for the news of the HOT 2nd basemen.

BECKETT HITS CANO WHOS IN A LOT OF PAIN, AND TAKEN OUT OF GAME

Josh Beckett has been throwing at Yankees all night, Cervelli, Gardner and now Cano. On a 2-2 count Beckett fired a cutting fastball right at the back knee of Robinson Cano. Cano appeared in a ton of pain barely able to walk to first. He eventually got there, but after the first pitch to Nick Swsiher, Cano took himself out of the game as the knee stiffened up, and appeared swollen. We will wait on news on Cano.

BREAKING NEWS! PETTITTE TO MISS NEXT START

During Andy Pettittes last start, Wednesday against Baltimore, he felt tightness in his left shoulder forcing Joe Girardi to take him out of the game with only 77 pitches and the Yanks up 6-1. Pettitte was having a fantastic start until the incident. Girardi went to Sergio Mitre for 3.2 innings, and the Yanks won 7-5. The tightness will cause Pettitte to miss his next start Monday in Detroit, Sergio Mitre will get the ball in replace of Pettitte. This will move Javier Vazquez to Tuesday. Pettitte is still listed as Day to Day.

GAME BREAK! METS VS: GIANTS, IKE & BARAJAS GO YARD

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Ike Davis smacked a two run homer, to give the Mets a 3-0 lead, followed by another shot by catcher Rod Barajas. The first run was knocked in by the struggling Jason Bay with an RBI single, in the first. The Mets are up now just by one, leading 4-3 in the middle of the 5th inning, after Mark DeRosa just knocked in a run with RBI ground out.

GAME BREAK! YANKEES VS: RED SOX SWISHER HITS 3 RUN BOMB!

Phil Hughes and Josh Beckett were just both throwing excellent games throught the first 3 inning, until in the top of the fourth innings, moments ago Beckett broke down first. On a 2-2 count Nick Swisher followed a Mark Teixiera walk and an A-Rod single with a three run shot to dead center field, for his 6th homer of the season. Yankees lead 3-0, top of the 4th, 2 out.

PostGame, Yankees 4 Orioles 1

NYY: 17-8
BAL: 7-19

WP: CC Sabathia(4-1)
LP: Jeremy Guthrie(0-4)
S: Joba Chamberlain(1)

Starters:

NYY--
CC Sabathia
8.0 IP, 6 H, 1 Earned Run, 2 Walks, 2 K, 1 HR Allowed

BAL-- Jeremy Guthrie
7.0 IP, 6 H, 4 Earned Runs, 2 Walks, 2 K, 1 HR Allowed

Pitching:
CC Sabathia kept rolling tonight as he had great command of all of his pitches and only throwing 106 pitches over 8 innings. His fastball was on tonight though he only struck two batters out. Sabathia just looked totally in command tonight as he lowered his ERA to 2.74. Following CC, Mariano Rivera had the night off so Joba Chamberlain was called upon to nail down his 1st save of the 2010 season and only his 2nd save of his career.

Offense:
The bats weren't all alive tonight. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the 4th, Nick Swisher came up with Alex Rodriguez aboard, and he ripped one to the right fielder Nick Markakis which allowed A-Rod to score on an RBI single and Swisher tied the ballgame up. In the same inning with Nick Swisher & Brett Gardner on base and Randy Winn up, he hit a moon shot to right center field his first as a Yankee and the Yankees then took a 4-1 lead which is the score they would win by.

Offensive Box Score:

1. SS Derek Jeter, 0-4

9. LF Randy Winn, 1-3, 1 RUN, 3 RBI(3), 1 HOME RUN(1)

Game Picture:

The Game Picture for tonight's ball game goes to the number 9 hitter, Randy Winn who jacked a 3 run home run to right center field in the bottom half of the 4th to give CC Sabathia the 4-1 lead which he would use to earn his 4th win of the season.

The Yankees will call upon A.J Burnett for tomorrow night's ball game which will start at 7:05 PM at the Stadium in the Bronx. The Orioles will send rookie southpaw Brian Matusz to the mound in game 2 of the series.

BREAKING NEWS: Yankees Vazquez to miss next start

New York Yankees starter Javier Vazquez will miss his next slated start says manager Joe Girardi. Vazquez is scheduled to pitch a week from today next Monday in Detroit against the Tigers.

PostGame, Mets 5 Phillies 11

NYM: 14-11
PHI: 14-10

WP: Jamie Moyer(3-2)
LP: Johan Santana(3-2)

Starters:

NYM--
Johan Santana
3.2 IP, 8 H, 10 Earned Runs, 2 Walks, 1 K, 4 HR Allowed

PHI-- Jamie Moyer
6.0 IP, 6 H, 5 Earned Runs, 2 K

Pitching:
Well the score tells the story for tonight's ball game as Johan Santana the ace of the Mets staff was lit up and was charged with 10 runs over 3.2 innings. Santana just did not look comfortable and had trouble throwing strikes. He also did not put batters away when he was ahead of the count. I don't believe he has any physical problems, i think it was just a hiccup for him. Over Santana's 6 starts he has averaged an 89.3 MPH fastball, but tonight was sort of a good sign as he was hitting 91 all night long. For the bullpen following Santana, Hisanori Takahashi, Pedro Feliciano, Fernando Nieve, and K-Rod all made appearances.

Offense:
The Mets offense got off to a quick start as they got 3 runs in the first for Santana thanks to a David Wright bomb which was his fifth of the year. In the top of the fourth with Jeff Francoeur aboard Rod Barajas smacked his sixth homerun off the foul pole in left and gave the Mets a 5-2 lead at that point. Jose Reyes is a concern for me lately, as after the first game when he was in the third hole he has not been able to hit and is swinging at the first pitches of his at bats very often. Reyes went 1 for 13 in this series.

Offensive Box Score:

1. CF Gary Matthews JR, 0-4
2. 2B Luis Castillo, 1-4, 1 RUN
3. SS Jose Reyes, 0-4
4. LF Jason Bay, 1-3, 1 RUN, 1 Walk
5. 3B David Wright, 1-4, 1 RUN, 3 RBI(19), 1 HOME RUN(5)
6. 1B Fernando Tatis, 1-4, 1 K
7. RF Jeff Francoeur, 0-3, 1 RUN
8. C Rod Barajas, 2-4, 1 RUN, 2 RBI(13), 1 HOME RUN(6)
9. SP Johan Santana, 0-1, 1 K

Game Picture:

The Game Picture goes to a Phillie tonight, but it could of gone to one of these two players. Shane Victorino or Chase Utley. I chose the flying Hawaiian because his grand slam in the 4th opened up the HUGE inning for the Phillies off of Santana.

The Mets will leave the City of Brotherly Love tonight and will travel to visit the Cincinnati Reds for a 3 game series starting tomorrow night at 7:10 PM. It will be Oliver Perez for the New York Mets as Mike Leake will throw for the Reds.

PreGame, Mets vs. Phillies GAME 25

PostGame, Yankees 12 White Sox 3

NYY: 16-8
CHW: 10-15

WP: Phil Hughes(3-0)

LP: Mark Buehrle(2-4)

Starters:

NYY-- Phil Hughes

7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 Walk, 6 K

CHW-- Mark Buehrle

4.2 IP, 10 H, 5 Earned Runs, 1 Walk, 3 K, 2 HR Allowed

Pitching:

Phil Hughes was incredible today over his 7 innings of work. All of his pitches were great today including his cutter and curveball both looked great and also had great velocity on his fastball. The one reason this season i have not trusted Hughes was because in his first start he walked 5 Angels, in his next start almost threw a no-hitter. In his last start though he walked 4 more batters, so we got the feeling he is going to be an erratic pitcher. In this game though i saw the same Hughes that i saw on the 21st of April as he almost threw a no-hitter. Following Hughes, recently called up Mark Melancon who replaced Curtis Granderson on the roster pitched the final two innings despite giving up a 3 run homerun to Paul Konerko in the ninth.

Offense:

You know your team is a winner when two of your best players( Curtis Granderson & Alex Rodriguez ) are out and you still score 12 runs and get 16 hits against an All-Star pitcher in Mark Buerhle. Brett Gardner got the scoring going today with an RBI single in the 2nd, and then he blasted his first home run of the season in the 4th innings which gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 5th inning, one of the hottest hitters in the league, Robinson Cano stepped up and smacked his 9th home run this season, it was a 3 run shot and it gave the Yanks a 5-0 lead. An inning later, Nick Swisher who has been struggling blasted his 4th homerun of the season a two run shot to right field and it gave the Yankees a 7-0 lead. In the 7th, with the bases loaded and Derek Jeter up, he took a bases loaded walk to force in Jorge Posada, and at that point it was 8-0. In the same inning and again the bases loaded with Nick Johnson up, he smashed a two run RBI double to center to score Brett Gardner and Ramiro Pena, that made the score 10-0. A batter later with Jeter & Johnson on base and Mark Teixeira up, Mark who has an awesome day ripped a 2 run RBI double and at the point it was 12-0.

Offensive Box Score:

1. SS Derek Jeter, 2-4, 1 RUN, 1 Walk, 1 RBI(20)

2. 1B Nick Johnson, 1-5, 1 RUN, 1 K, 2 RBI(7)

3. DH Mark Teixeira, 4-5, 2 RUNS, 1 K, 2 RBI(12)

4. RF Nick Swisher, 3-4, 2 RUNS, 1 Walk, 2 RBI(15), 1 HOME RUN(4)

5. 2B Robinson Cano, 2-4, 2 RUNS, 1 Walk, 1 K, 3 RBI(21), 1 HOME RUN(9)

6. C Jorge Posada, 2-5, 1 RUN, 1 K

7. LF Marcus Thames, 0-4

8. CF Brett Gardner, 2-4, 2 RUNS, 1 Walk, 1 K, 2 RBI(9), 1 HOME RUN(1)

9. 3B Ramiro Pena, 0-5, 1 RUN, 1 K

Game Picture:

The Game Picture was a tough decision, for me it was between Phil Hughes, Brett Gardner, Robinson Cano, or Mark Teixeira. I went with Phil Hughes, just because he threw a shutout through 7 innings. If i did not pick Hughes, i would of probably given it to Mark Teixeira, because once the calendar flips to May he can hit like crazy as he went 4 for 5.

The Yankees will welcome the Baltimore Orioles fresh off a sweep of the Red Sox, as it will be CC Sabathia for the Yankees and he will be opposed by Jeremy Guthrie who is winless this season. First Pitch will be 7:05 tomorrow night at the Stadium.

Question: A Day off for A-Rod or Pain in Knee?

UPDATE 4:43 PM:
During the PostGame, when asked if Alex Rodriguez was hurt, Joe Girardi said he will be in the lineup tomorrow. He said he was out of the lineup today because he has played every inning of every game thus far this season. He did say that A-Rod did feel something while running the bases yesterday and he is very stiff but will be in the lineup tomorrow

There is a question brewing around the Yankees right now that has to do with Alex Rodriguez. During today's broadcast Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay said multiple reports have come out to say that Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez has a pain in his knee, but the Yankees are not sure if there is any structural damage. Now at the same time other reports are saying it's just a day off for A-Rod.

As more stories are revealed look to Flushing 2 the Bronx for the latest.

Curtis Granderson to DL

Yankees newcomer Curtis Granderson has been placed on the 15 Day DL after suffering a strained groin while running the bases in today's loss. Pitcher Mark Melancon has been called up and will replace Granderson on the roster.

Mets-- Outfield Notes

  • According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Carlos Beltran hopes to begin running this week, in hopes of returning either before or right after the All Star Break.
  • Jeff Francoeur will sit today's game after telling reporters he will do whatever to get into the lineup today. Not sure if he's more hurt than we though, or Jerry is just playing it safe. ( Hopefully its the second option i said )
