• Jose Reyes who was slated to return today, was scratched from the starting lineup today, because he had to complete one more test with the doctors for clearance.Reyes spoke with reporters before the game and said "It's nothing serious."
• 20 Year old Pitching Prospect Jenrry Mejia who was scheduled to throw today, will be delayed until tomorrow.

Mets sign Kiko Calero

The Mets signed Kiko Calero to a minor league deal worth up to $1.5MM. He earns $850K if he makes the team, with another $650K available in incentives. There is no opt-out if the Mets send him to the minors. Calero pitched 60 innings last year to an ERA of 1.95 for the Florida Marlins. Kiko will be an nice piece to add to the amazin's bullpen, which already consists of All Star Fransisco Rodriguez, Japanese import Ryoto Igarashi, and lefty specialist Pedro Feliciano.

Yankees start Spring training with a walkoff BANG!

The New York Yankees played their first spring training game at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa today against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Curtis Granderson started in center and Brett Gardner in left. Chad Gaudin pitched the first two innings and did not give up a hit or even a hard-hit ball. Gaudin was succeeded by Sergio Mitre, who was equal to Gaudin in that he also gave up no hits. Mitre was followed on the mound by Alfredo Aceves, who gave up two long fly ball outs in the fifth inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ramiro Pena started the scoring off in the bottom of the sixth inning, blasting a solo shot of former Yankee pitcher Steven Jackson. Nick Johnson then followed up with a pinch hit RBI double. Pittsburgh came back to tie it up 3-3 in the 8th but it was not until the bottom of the ninth inning with runners on 1st and second when prospect Collin Curtis hit a bomb over the wall in right, sending the bombers home with their first spring training win via another walkoff. An exciting day today at Geroge M. Stienbrenner field, as the Yankees take the game 6-3. Join the Yes network Friday as the Yankees take on the Tampa Bay Rays at 1:05 pm.

Dessens Hit by liner, leaves first spring training game

The New York Mets disabled list might have its first guest as Elmer Dessens left today's grapefruit game against the Braves after being struck in the right knee by a line drive off the bat of Brian McCann in the third inning. The Amazin's pulled off the win outscoring Atlanta 4-2, but leaving the game with one less player. Dessens was relieved by non-roster invitee Bobby Livingston. Dessens posted a 3.31 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 32 1/3 innings last season. There is no word yet on Dessens condition.

Thames can opt out if he dosent make roster

After signing a minor league deal with the New York Yankees last month, Marcus Thames can opt out of his contract with the Yankees if he does not make the opening roster come April 4th. Thames hit 252 with Detroit last year blasting 13 home runs in 258 at bats. "He was brought in to compete for a spot on the 25-man roster," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Friday. "And at the end of camp, if he makes it, great. If he doesn’t make it, he’s free." Thames will compete for the left field job this spring training with veteran Randy Winn and young speedster Brett Gardner. Marcus came up with the Yankees in 2002, only playing in 7 games but getting his first hit which was a home run off of future hall of famer Randy Johnson.

Mets interested in Kiko Calero

Rumors swirling in the Majors says that the Mets might be interested in right hander Kiko Calero who has spent a majority of his career on the DL. Over Kikos career he has spent two seasons with the Cardinals, four with the Athletics, and one with the Marlins. During Caleros 7 year career, he only had one season in 2008 where his ERA was above 4.00. The Mets are hesitating to give him a Major League Deal due to his injury written past. Stats from last season in Florida:

If the Mets can grab Beimel and Calero i think there bullpen would instantly go from mediocre to very impressive. Adding a talented righty in Kiko and another excellent lefty in Beimel and pair him up with Feliciano as an amazing lefty duo would be pretty hard to beat leading up to K-Rod in the 9th.
