Girardi to make 5th spot decision by Friday

Joe Girardi is under a lot of pressure this week, with only 2 more days for him and his coaching staff to decide who will be the 5th starter behind C.C Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettite, and Javier Vazquez. A group which consists of Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, Alfredo Aceves, Chad Gaudin and Sergio Mitre. Hughes seems to be in the lead, he told the media how he feels he did his last time out. "I thought I threw a few of the best changeups I've ever thrown, and probably the first strikeouts I've ever gotten off a changeup. It's hard to swallow the three home runs, because I'm happy with the way I am throwing." Coming into the spring it looked like Chamberlain's job to lose thought the skipper, and so far he is on track to do just that. He has shown improvement, from the beginning of the spring, but is it enough to grab the spot? I feel Hughes has the better arsenal for the job. His 95+ fastball always opens eyes, along with a nasty slider and a devolping changeup, is showing real promise. He is able to control his pitch count and emotions on the field, significantly better than Joba. It looks like Mitre, Aceves, and Gaudin are out, with the rumors of a possible swap of Mitre or Gaudin for outfielder Jamie Hoffman, who the Yanks are having second thoughts on after returning him to L.A. yesterday. We will just have to see, come Friday which of these two will be helping the great Rivera in the bullpen, and who will round out the starting 5 for the 2010 season.
